From fire to hydrology to the plants and animals that make up each community, this workshop will guide you through Florida’s natural communities with an emphasis on central Florida. This workshop will include field trips to plant community sites.
Participants learn to:
* Identify the different plant communities in Florida
* Recognize the natural forces that control these communities
* Recognize key indicator plant species for each community
* Determine management actions needed to maintain selected communities.

11:25 Central Florida Plant Communities as seen at the Disney Wilderness Preserve (DWP)

1:30 Field trip to view first set of DWP plant communities
– pine flatwoods
– cypress dome
– baygall
– depression marsh
– wet prairie
5:00 Upon returning to classroom – Brief session on plant identification if participants have collected plants in the field. Field guides will be available for use plus participants encouraged to bring their own.
6:30 Optional dinner at local area restaurant
Wednesday, May 20, 2009 – Disney Wilderness Preserve
8:30 Second field trip to view DWP plant communities not seen on Day 1
– floodplain swamp
– oak hammock
10:00 Break
10:15 Scrub and Sandhill
11:00 Field Trip to Lake Marion scrub area and other SWFWMD properties
(includes lunch)
2:45 Return to DWP
3:00 Preview of Withlacoochee and Crystal River communities
4:00 Leave for Chinsegut. Participants will be driving their own cars
6:00 Arrive at Chinsegut Hill Conference Center
6:45 Dinner at Chinsegut Hill Conference Center
Thursday, May 21, 2009 – Brooksville Ridge/Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area/Crystal River Preserve State Park
8:00 Gather (in parking lot at Chinsegut) to leave for field activities (participants will be traveling by van, transportation is provided).
8:40 Tour Coastal and Upland Communities of the CRPSP
– hydric hammock
– basin swamp
– coastal marsh
11:00 Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area
– Sandhill
12:00 Lunch
1:00 Tour of communities at Lizzie Sink on the Brooksville Ridge
– upland mixed forest
– miscellaneous other upland communities
3:30 Arrive back at Chinsegut, Workshop Review, Evaluation and Wrap-up
4:00 Adjourn
Instructors include: Dr. Michael Andreu, University of Florida, Dr. Monica Folk, The Nature Conservancy. Host biologists may include Dave Birdsall, South Florida Water Management District, Keith Morin, Crystal River Preserve State Park.
